A senior Navy intelligence officer, who had reportedly given evidence to the Criminal Investigations Department on Navy members allegedly involved in abductions and assisting illegal asylum seekers, is to be court martialed.

Navy Commander Vice Admiral Ravindra Wijegunaratne told The Sunday Leader that Commander K. C. Welagedara will face a court martial on the charge of going overseas without informing the Navy command and for bringing disrepute to the Navy.
There have been reports that K. C. Welagedara, who is now under Navy detention, is facing death threats, but the Navy commander said he is unaware of those claims.
He also said that his family members can visit him at the Navy headquarters where he is being detained and that he can file a complaint with the Human Rights Commission if he has any concerns.
